  Marie Mills Fall 2006 News...

Marie Mills Center’s Logo and Sign Project

This past spring Marie Mills Center was the beneficiary of a Tillamook High School Senior Service Project done by 2006 Graduate, Tyler Baldwin. Tillamook High School requires graduating seniors to partake in a Senior Project. A goal of Marie Mills Center in the past year was to come up with a new logo that represented our agency and what we do. Our current logo had been in existence since 1980 and was in need of freshening up.

Board Member, Mollie Nuppenau, approached Tillamook High School's Art Teacher about the possibility of this being a project for the art class. As it turned out, Tyler Baldwin decided to take on this task as his Senior Project. Tyler designed a very nice logo that embodied what Marie Mills Center is. This project quickly took on a life of it's own with Tyler incorporating into his project the construction of a Building Sign for our Front Street Facility that mirrored the new logo that he was developing. This project met an agency goal that quickly evolved and was mutually beneficial to Marie Mills Center through the creation of a logo and sign and to a Tillamook High School Senior who was able to create these as his Senior Service Project. Tyler was mentored on this project by Mollie Nuppenau, Marie Mills Center Board Member. As part of this project Tyler had to do a final presentation of his project to High School Advisors, which included a power point presentation of the entire project. Thank you Tyler!

Huckleberry Health Fair Booth

Huckleberry Health Fair Booth  At this years Huckleberry Health Fair held on August 10th and 11th during the Tillamook County Fair the Tillamook Developmental Disability Coalition (TDDC) which consists of the Marie Mills Center, the Marie Mills Foundation, Tillamook Special Olympics, TARC, Integrated Services Network, and the Community Developmental Disability Program of TFCC; had a booth for the third year in a row. The purpose in doing this event is to reach out to the community and let them know of the many and varied services to individuals with developmental disabilities that exist in our community today.

Activities Planned by Volunteers

A group of volunteers, referred to as the Recreation Committee, consisting of Phyllis Sisco, Personal Agent. Ken Ballweg, CDDP Case Manager, Cindy Green, MMCI Vocational Program Manager, Judy Gollon, Special Olympics, Kim Armitage, MMCI Secretary, and Gladys Jacobsen, TARC; put lots of time and effort into planning activities that those with developmental disabilities in our community can easily partake in. Earlier this year the group put together a Dinner and Comedy Show. TLC Credit Union graciously sponsored this event for those we serve and their families. Approximately 150 people enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and entertainment by Michael Corbus of “The Show”.

Most recently a group of 38 participants and volunteers enjoyed a trip to the Corvallis water park.

This group will also be helping Marie Mills Center and TARC with their Annual Halloween Party and Dance to be held at the Swiss Hall on October 28th. This event is open to the public with a canned food donation taken at the door.

Volunteering is good for everyone, if you are interested in helping the Recreation Committee please contact any of the people previously listed to find out more about how you can help.

New Contract and Summer Work Activities

The Marie Mills Center Janitorial Program recently landed a large contract which is providing employment opportunities to individuals with developmental disabilities. This contract encompasses the janitorial services for the newly constructed Forest Interpretive Center located on the Wilson River Highway. This three person crew consisting of Emil Kruse, Tara Seifert and supervisor Georgia Britton.

This contract fits nicely with other janitorial contracts (two rest areas) that Marie Mills Center already services on the Wilson River Highway. This new contract was a nice lead in to summer which is our busiest time of the year. During the summer season we see a large increase in contract work available for individuals in our program. These summertime increases include Restroom Maintenance Services at the Cape Lookout State Park, a contract we acquired in 1980 and also increased services at multiple rest areas throughout the county.

The Summer season also shows increased work schedules at the Tillamook Country Smoker for our crews.
